The premises of the plants are turning into places of recreation and public activities. They are visited by hundreds of thousands of people.
The city authorities are actively engaged in the redevelopment of the former industrial territories. Absolutely different spaces are replacing these former premises. The changes have been going on in Europe since the 1980s. In Russia such developments are also gathering pace today.
Grandpont Nature Park appeared in south Oxford in 1985. It was created on the site of a gas works that was demolished in 1960. Grandpont covers three hectares. The park is a recreation area in the city boundaries where you can enjoy the nature. It also provides opportunities for walks and cycling trips. According to Tim Sadler, Executive Director, Sustainable City, Oxford Council, new shopping centers and residential neighborhoods are being built on the site of former factories. But if reconstruction of such area is too expensive, they open new public spaces. Typically, they do not provide complex infrastructure, but attract attention of the residents to their recreational opportunities.
Landschaftspark in Duisburg was created in 1991. It occupies 180 hectars of the territory of former agricultural lands and industrial territory of the plant for the production of coal and steel. While planning most of the industrial structures were preserved. According to the project developers the starting point of space design was the memory of the past. In Landschaftspark the blast furnace was converted into an observation tower, Europe’s largest artificial center for diving was built on the site of the old gas meter, the bunkers for ore storage were changed into a climbing wall. In the evening all complex is lit by the light installations. Duisburg Park has become one of the the most popular tourist destination in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen). Over 1 million visitors came and about 300 different events.
In 2018, the Landshaftspark was under reconstruction. There was research conducted on the masonry chimneys and the hill-trumpet refurbished. The repair works on the factory building is being completed. Its premises will be rent out for seminars and workshops. The plans include acoustic and light reconstruction of the power plant.
This year it is planned to release a mobile application, the purpose of which is to demonstrate that the Park area is avaliable in the form of a game and give the user information about objects regardless of the route. The British newspaper “The Guardian” has chosen the Park as one of the ten most beautiful Metropolitan oases in the world. German TV shows and videos are always made on the territory of the Park.
Among the major activities of the Park planned for 2019, there are a street food festival in May, an exhibition of photography and travel (Outdoor Photo + Adventure), Traumzeit music festival and the Ruhr games in June. On June 29, 2019, the Park will celebrate its 25th anniversary. It will be held in the framework of the annual cultural festival “Additional layer” (ExtraSchicht). The event is expected to attract up to 200 thousand visitors.
In Perm the design of a new city space on the basis of the industrial zone was initiated in 2018. It is planned that Car Repair Plant named after Shpagin will be a part of the future cultural cluster of Perm. The future center will house three museums: the Perm State Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art and the Local Lore Museum. Experts and architects of the project emphasize that while redeveloping and modernizing the space, they are going to preserve the industrial and architectural heritage.
