Chinese-style Peony Pavilion for Perm

A ceremony to mark the laying of the foundation stone of a traditional Peony Pavilion took place on May 14 at the No. 2 Gymnasium School in Perm. According to the City Administration’s website, the Pavilion was presented to Perm Krai by the government of the Chinese province of Jiangxi and the city of Fuzhou as a symbol of friendship and positive
partnership. In May 2014, the Perm Krai Government and the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province signed an agreement on cooperation in trade, scientific and technical areas and in the cultural sphere.
In May 2019, a Chinese delegation arrived in Perm led by Zhou Meng, Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of Jiangxi Province. The guests met with the leadership of the Perm Krai and the city, visited the Perm State University and No. 2 Gymnasium School, where they discussed cooperation in the field of scientific and academic collaboration (student exchanges, joint scientific activity and participation in conferences and seminars).
The Peony Pavilion is one of the most important symbols of Chinese theatre art. The play “Peony Pavilion” is traditionally performed in the traditional Chinese opera genre of Kunqu, an important genre with a history going back 600 years.
At No. 2 Gymnasium School events for the guests included a tour in Chinese, a concert and a presentation of educational projects.

According to Chinese tradition, the success of any construction depends on how ceremoniously the first stone is laid, so the guests paid special attention to marking the start of construction of the pavilion at the Gymnasium School. As Zhou Meng explained, the Peony Pavilion is not just a building, it is one of the most important symbols of Chinese culture, without which it is impossible to understand the spirit of the Chinese people and the Chinese soul.
The opening of the Pavilion is scheduled for October 2019.
