Perm University students win prizes at regional stages of English-Language Video Clip Competition

The Russia-wide “iTravel: Russia: My Region for Victory” competition was held this spring. Organised by the National Association for Teachers of English (NATE), it marked the 75th anniversary of Victory in World War II. The competition was open to secondary school students and students from higher education. All the video clips were uploaded to YouTube.

Under the guidance of their teacher from the Department for English Language and Multi- Cultural Communication, Yulya Popova, the Perm State University (PSU) students took third place in the regional stages of the competition. They are studying at the Faculty of Philology on the Journalism pathway. In their video clip, Diana Moryakova, Margarita Galimullina and Dmitry Shadrin talked about the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, and about the businesses, higher education institutions and schools in Perm which were converted to hospitals during the war. The same competition also saw a joint team from Perm’s colleges take second place in the category for college students, and their clip went through to the national stages.

Svetlana Polyakova, chair of the Perm Association for Teachers of English said: “The video clips definitely have educational potential. We will be able to send the students’ work to the Oxford and Louisville Twinning Committees”.

The iTravel: Russia Video Clip competition is organised by the National Association for Teachers of English. The Perm English Language Teachers’ Association Regional Group is based in the Faculty of Modern Languages and Literature at PSU. The Association organizes events on the theme of English-language learning jointly with the Perm Krai administration, the Twin Cities Committee and the A.M. Gorky Perm Krai Library.
